What is condemned game about
As mentioned above, fire arms are extremely scarce, and only carry very limited ammo when you do find one, meaning you find whatever you can to beat enemies back. And unlike other first person games, where melee weapons often feel a little weak, the deliberate animations and long wind up times go a long way to giving the combat real heft.
It really makes the player paranoid, and it only continues as the game reaches its climax. Despite being such a small location, this is where the game fully embraces its survival horror roots, with the whole level playing out as one giant puzzle box you must solve.
Enemies come from seemingly all sides. This being the first entry in the series, there are of course some flaws in its execution. You could argue the first half is a bit too much of a slow burn, with you traversing samey subway tunnels and run down offices. Although depending on who you are, this could be a good thing.
The game did get a sequel in the form of Condemned 2: Bloodshot, which is a fascinating game to talk about in its own right. They took the story in an interesting direction, too, with Ethan having fallen on hard times due to the events of the first game. For a while, it keeps the same strong atmosphere the original did.
The problem is it goes too far. Remember earlier when I said that the original game showed an impressive amount of restraint in its settings and action? Condemned 2 eventually becomes a full-on action game, and enemies are now far more over-the-top than before at one point you fight a Harley Quinn knockoff in a factory filled with exploding dolls.
Monolith instead would go on to make the ill-fated Gotham City Impostors, as well as the Middle Earth: Shadow of games. I think that if—at the very least—the first game received some kind of official rerelease, people would welcome it with open arms. As it stands right now, though, Condemned: Criminal Origins is a hard-to-find, forgotten classic that more people need to check out.
He and his fellow officers enter into an abandoned building that is surrounded by psychopaths and criminals.
The crime scene they investigate is of a young woman. She is on the floor with strangulation wounds, sitting across a table from a male mannequin. Ethan, along with his colleagues, agree that the murder was most likely committed by the Match Maker, a serial killer that Ethan has been investigating. After they collect evidence from the scene, one of the officers smell cigarette smoke. Believing that the smoke must be coming from their suspect, they decide to split up and go after him.
While searching for the suspect, Ethan tries to restore power from an electrical box. Due to an electrical surge, Ethan is shocked, and drops to the floor, causing his weapon to be thrown from his hand. A man hiding in the shadows takes it and flees.
Ethan manages to chase the man into a small, dead-end room, where the man holds Ethan at gunpoint and tells him they have similar goals. Ethan's colleagues enter the room and tell the man to drop his weapon, and are promptly shot by the man with Ethan's gun, who then shoves Ethan out a window onto the street. Malcolm warns Ethan that he is wanted for the deaths of the two officers who were shot with Ethan's gun. Ethan is determined to prove his innocence, although his own sanity appears to be slipping, as throughout the game he suffers numerous horrific visions.
Later, he finds the body of the Match Maker, killed by his own modus operandi in an old department store. He presumes that the man at the original crime scene, referred to in the game as "Serial Killer X", is the culprit and that he is trying to kill the serial killers that Ethan is looking for.
