How old is my huffy bicycle
I have repaired the masterlink and the bike looks a lot like the one in the music video for "Sleeping Bag" by ZZ Top. Though its not same bike, just looks like it. The history is that their grandpa was the original owner, he took very good care of it until he could no longer ride due to his health.
He parked the bike and it sat for over 25 years, maybe longer. Being covered in oil was a big break for me. The oil preserved the chrome, paint, rubber, and upholstry.
The underside of the fenders are I think rust free. I'm cleaning the bike now and originally it was to be a parts donor for my Columbia, but I changed my mind. It sat in my attic since it's purchase and now, it down, taken apart, and getting a good, through cleaning inside and out. It will not be restored as they are only factory original once.

At the bottom of this plate is a round chrome-colored ornament indicating bike name and manufacturer. There are also many dainty, frilly light-yellow ornamental bands encircling the purple frame tubes at various places--at least one on the front wheel fork also indicates the bike name. One of the pictures that i uploaded here shows part of the serial number near the white Huffy tag.
It's not easy to read the serial number unless u first rub something with a contrasting color like white toothpaste into the indentations of the serial number stamping, then wipe off the surface of the metal but not too hard, leaving just enough toothpaste to read the serial number. Trek is more typical of what you can expect to find.
They have changed their system a few different times, so it can be a little more complicated. Mostly you can find the date after some research. Thankfully, there are resources online such as Vintage Trek to help you crack the code. There are however many brands who have no real guidelines or records of what the code represents. Most serial numbers are found under the bottom bracket, although some can be found on the headset or one of the frame tubes. You can still easily get to it as the this video shows:.
At some time, every old bike was the latest model, and with that usually comes marketing, catalogs and bike manuals. There are still a lot of these resources online and in print and to help identify vintage bikes. However, these are sometimes painted over, but all is not lost if the name has been removed along the way.
My Ten Speed has a page that helps distinguish different bikes over the decades. While American Vintage Bicycles has enough information and images to be a great starting point. The best resource which is well renowned and full of old literature is the Veteran Cycle Club. There is even a list of every bike brand to help you with your search. Once you know the brand names, there are other resources that open up.
The value guide lets you search old models of different years and see images and in some cases full manufacture specifications. This is a huge help and can work like database.
